SCAM: the Merriam Webster defines scam as a fraudulent deal or deceptive act or operation which is synonym to a con game. But I like how the Cambridge Dictionary puts it as an illegal plan for making money especially one that involves tricking people. You can also refer to the American dictionary definition here.

PYRAMID SCHEME: A pyramid scheme is a business model that recruits members via a promise of payments or services for enrolling others into the scheme, rather than supplying investments or sale of products or services. As recruiting multiplies, recruiting becomes quickly impossible, and most members are unable to profit; as such, pyramid schemes are unsustainable and often illegal.
PYRAMID SCHEME 

NETWORK MARKETING/MLM/DUAL MARKETING/AFFILIATE MARKETING: Direct selling method in which independent-agents serve as distributors of goods and services, and are encouraged to build and manage their own sales force by recruiting and training other independent agents. In this method, a commission is earned on the agent's own sales revenue, as well as on the sales revenue of the sales-force recruited by the agent and his or her recruits (called downline).
MLM STRUCTURE 
with multilevel marketing business, there is a product to be sold or a service to be distributed, and your money will come from product sales. And therein lies the distinction between the two: A legitimate network marketing business makes money from product sales. A pyramid scheme makes money from recruiting people.

THINGS TO NOTE: The structure of a multilevel marketing company and that of a pyramid scheme in most cases are almost similar.
